picasso said art is a lie that seeks to intuit the truth or as much of the truth as it can understand
not sure what he meant. maybe it means absolute truth can't be reached even with the highest art. maybe it can just approach that. what do you think anthony?Posted 2 years ago permalink -
this is a great quote pinchbrian, thx for sharing. I believe that truth is one of the most misunderstood and underrated ideas. If you don't mind i'll use truth and honesty interchangeably here. honesty is whats left after we peel away every layer of being. It is so sacred that it is protected and at the same time manipulated by those layers or various states of consciousness we choose.
Picasso may believe that art is a lie because in the pursuit of art we may manipulate our real feeling and portray a facade instead of the complete story in order to make an impression. Nonetheless there is usually a very good reason for this (see 'i expect to survive' in anthony's notes).
However, in part i agree with Picasso's quote because our expression of art is unconditional acceptance of who we are in a particular moment. In other words in the pursuit of art we strive to exhibit a vulnerable or truthful moment. We all admire art because we can connect with the honesty the artist so boldly chose to reveal to the viewer. Picasso is saying that his expression of art is the pursuit of truth whether he fulfills that entirely or not.

..art... someone asked in a movie once.. "What is Art..?"
..a photographer answered: "..keep the fence, lose the clothes.."
I think it can be fulfillment and/or disappointment in its own truthfulness....Art is.. somewhat of a truth when life's a lot to think about... an endless outlet for me ..to be me..
..for anyone to relate to art..regardless of form or type, etc.. is to have found their truth...
and...i dont know what im saying...just another artsy 5:29 am..Posted 2 years ago permalink
